GUIDE TO VISITING
If it’s your first time visiting the historical city of Prague, a trip to Prague Castle is a must, particularly if you love castles, as I do. This ancient Czech landmark is truly unmissable.
Why is the Prague Castle (Pražský Hrad) unmissable, you ask?
For several reasons:
- It dominates the city skyline, perched high up on the hill, so it definitely captures one’s attention.
- It is the largest castle in the world and is still a working castle.
- The castle is magnificent in its mix of architecture, and is beautifully preserved.
- It’s an ancient Czech symbol, with centuries of history and the most significant monument in the country.
- The landmark is the oldest castle complex in the world, founded around the year 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid Dynasty.
- And, it’s FREE to enter the castle grounds.
My Visit to Prague Castle
I spent 4 days in Prague and the highlight of my stay was a day trip to the ginormous Prague Castle Complex.
As part of a guided tour, we were transported by bus with an expert local tour guide, which made it easy to get in without any hassles.
I was thrilled to explore the myriad of monuments whilst learning fascinating details revealing the castle’s rich heritage. An immersive experience I thoroughly recommend.
About Prague Castle
The Prague Castle complex covers an area of approximately 70,000 square metres, located right in the heart of the city. There are various monuments and buildings inside the fortified walls of the castle, which is like a small town on its own. The panoramic views of the city are pretty spectacular from there too.
The complex is the country’s centre of politics, history and culture, so it’s no surprise that it stands listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
What Is The Castle Used For?
The Castle serves as the official residence and workplace of the President of the Czech Republic.
The complex is a tourist destination and a huge attraction, with 2.7 million visitors per year who come to experience the grandeur and see the different buildings and exhibits.
Prague Castle also hosts official ceremonies and concerts in the grand halls.
The castle has always been the seat of Czech Monarchs as well, for Princes and Kings.
It has also functioned as the seat of the Prague Bishop, and a convent.
Furthermore, it was also the seat of the Holy Roman Emperor in mid 1400’s.
Good King Wenceslas (Prince Wenceslas I of Bohemia in 10th century) is interred in St Vitus Church here, along with other royals and Patron Saints.
Architectural Splendour
Architecturally, the castle complex is quite unique, showcasing Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque, Renaissance and Neoclassical styles. It reflects the different builds and reconstructions over many centuries, as it evolved from originally just a small fort with a moat, built in a strategic position, to the grand cultural monument it is today.
The castle has been enlarged, with buildings added, structures fortified, facades refurbished and interiors adorned throughout the eras, in between periods of war and decay, all of which have shaped this landmark’s legacy.
What To See At The Prague Castle Complex?
The castle precinct houses an array of historic buildings, including museums and galleries showcasing the Czech Republic’s history and artefacts.
The complex includes 4 courtyards, 4 palaces, 5 churches, several towers, various gardens, a vineyard, stables, and more.
Highlights of Prague Castle:
