OFF-BEAT ACCOMMODATION, IN AND OUT OF THE CITY
If you’re looking for a different type of accommodation, maybe something special, in the city centre or outside of the city, here are a few quirky and unique hotels in Melbourne to consider. These all offer something out of the ordinary, to make your stay exciting and memorable.
1. Adina Hotel at Pentridge, Coburg
You wouldn’t normally want to stay in a prison, right? But rest assured your time here will be nothing other than comfortable. This luxury hotel was built inside the historic pentridge walls in Coburg and makes for a quirky and unique accommodation option you might enjoy.
Located out of Melbourne’s city centre, the medieval style building with Gothic bluestone walls was converted after the prison closed in 1997. Some of the rooms take up several cells and are very spacious. All rooms have been beautifully fitted out as apartments.
Also famed as a tourist destination, Pentridge Hotel offers tours of some of the old cells where notorious prisoners were kept.
Enjoy doing time at Pentridge.
2. Ibis Styles Hotel, Southbank
A unique hotel centrally located in the city, close to major attractions, and without the high cost you’d normally expect for such accommodation.
The colourful wall art and quirky decor at the Ibis Styles Hotel make it a little different.
3. Captain's Retreat, Williamstown
A beautifully decorated, historical property, originally built in 1862. If you want something away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is perfectly situated, not too far away, on Hobsons Bay, where you can experience old world charm. The retreat is furnished in art deco style with attention to detail, and every room is unique.
Choose a room, an apartment or a cottage, for a relaxing getaway by the water. Suitable for short or longer stays, you’ll relax by the sea and be walking distance to the city.
4. The Royce, Melbourne
A new boutique hotel which opened in 2023, showcases old school Hollywood glamour with glass fixtures, chandeliers and plush couches. Art deco styled luxury accommodation housed in a heritage listed building in the city, which was originally a glitzy showroom for Rolls Royce and other luxury vehicles, the first in Melbourne.
If a little opulence is what you’re after, the Royce Hotel in all its splendour is for you.
5. Adelphi Hotel, Melbourne
A boutique hotel, with bright and quirky fixtures and decor, swinging couches and an over-hanging glass bottomed pool on the roof.
You are greeted with a sculpted wireframe horse at reception and the rooms have bold zig-zag carpet. The decor throughout the hotel is inspired by sweets, desserts and in particular chocolate.
Located in the middle of Melbourne, you will certainly find this a sweet stay.

An additional part of your stay can include a helicopter ride to a nearby winery for tastings and lunch.
10. Hotel No, Melbourne

A unique urban oasis, Hotel No is placed in close proximity, and an easy stroll, to many Melbourne attractions.
11. Little River Bed and Breakfast, Geelong
A unique property to stay, and certainly a bit quirky, with some interesting art sculptures outside. The old bluestone building blends into the historic area of Geelong.
Interesting fact: the original farm house was used in the movie Mad Max and some of the scened were filmed in Little River.
Pets are allowed at the property.
12. The Nunnery Accommodation, Fitzroy
If you’re looking for basic accommodation not far from the city, then the Nunnery is perfect. Housed in a former 19th century convent, where many nuns lived for decades, this quirky guesthouse is mostly suited to backpackers.
The historic architecture of this 1888 property, with high ceilings and stained glass windows, makes it a charming place to stay in Melbourne and close to attractions, and you’ll be allowed more liberties than the nuns used to have.
That’s it for the quirky and unique hotels in Melbourne.
Check them out for yourself and go ahead and book your next stay.
